APEC Meetings begin in Lima and Trujillo
Minister Renato Reyes Tagle, Peru’s senior official at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum said he hopes to reach a consensus with the other 20 economies to approve a roadmap to promote the transition to economic formality in the Asia-Pacific region.
The III Senior Officials’ Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum is bringing together representatives from 21 member economies with the aim of strengthening cooperation in various key areas for the region. The Meeting and related events are underway in Lima, Peru’s capital city, at the local Convention Center in San Borja, through August 25.
“I am meeting with my counterparts from the senior officials of the other APEC 21 economies and we hope to reach a consensus to approve the consensus document on the Lima Roadmap to promote the transition to economic formality in the Asia-Pacific,” said Minister Reyes.
Ministerial Meeting on Food Security and related events
Meanwhile, in Trujillo, the Ministerial Meeting on Food Security and related events have also begun.
Minister Reyes stated that, according to official information from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), one-third of the world’s food production is wasted; he also expressed concern that more than 3 billion people worldwide do not have access to secure food, much less essential proteins.
“The APEC team, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international organizations, and the private sector have been working since 2022 on priorities and identified a very specific issue: developing principles to help reduce food loss and waste in the Asia-Pacific. According to FAO, one-third of the world’s food production is lost or wasted. Meanwhile, more than 3 billion people worldwide do not have secure access to food. This creates a barrier to food availability and has economic, social, and environmental costs,” he said. Peru’s proposal mainly focuses on negotiating with the other 20 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum a set of principles to help mitigate food loss. “We have been working for several months with representatives from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, and hopefully, these principles can be approved this Sunday in Trujillo, concluding the Ministerial Meeting on Food Security (FSMM) and related events,” he concluded.
