Foreign Ministry organizes high-level dialogue on the governance of artificial intelligence in the Asia-Pacific
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry in coordination with the Secretariat of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), held the “High-Level Dialogue on the Role of Regional Cooperation in the Governance of Artificial Intelligence”, to discuss what or which parameters should be applied for the appropriate use of this technology in APEC economies.
Experts from multinational companies , including Microsoft, Samsung, E&Y, as well as the Asia Program Carnegie, OECD, Global Alliance for Artificial Intelligence, among others, shared their experiences and discussed the benefits of using AI in the Asia-Pacific region and challenges that come with it.
During his participation, Peru’s senior APEC official, Renato Reyes Tagle, commented that AI is having a transformative and disruptive impact, both economic and social, and is driving innovation in various fields, smoothing out the transition towards more agile, efficient and user-centered operating models.
“AI definitely represents an enormous potential for development, competitiveness and growth. However, it involves risks and challenges that policymakers, companies and academics should consider,” he stressed.
In the APEC region, the adoption of AI varies from one economy to another, and the spaces for dialogue opened by APEC give economies the possibility for working together to share experiences and best practices on the use of this technology.
This event is taking place in the context of the Third Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM 3) of the APEC Forum currently underway in Lima, Peru.
