APEC PERU 2024 achievement: a successful strategy to build consensus and approve unprecedented documents on inclusiveness in Asia-Pacific

One of the most notable challenges met during APEC PERU 2024 was the return to consensus decision-making in the region after two years of tensions among some of its members. This was highlighted by Minister Renato Reyes, Peru’s Senior Official at APEC, during a recent interview with a national media outlet.

He underscored the unanimous approval of 20 deliverables as a strong sign that our country managed to connect various strategies. “Building consensus is like getting the fuel a vehicle needs to work,” he added.

The establishment of a socioeconomic inclusion agenda was also a very relevant factor in the forum. The minister highlighted the meeting addressed issues such as the empowerment of people with different abilities, promoting formal employment, as well as the economic empowerment of women. He added that thanks to this type of measures, Peru’s foreign policy has excelled in Asia-Pacific, gaining applause from the rest of the participating economies.

Launching an initiative such as APEC of the People was an unprecedented effort to bring this forum and civil society closer. Reyes mentioned more than 170 events have been held in nine regions across Peru, reaching over half a million participants. He said over five thousand grants were awarded focused on enhancing digital skills that are so important today, especially for SMEs. More than 60% of these grants were awarded to women.

Reyes compared the attendance figures between APEC PERU 2024 and the 2016 edition, revealing an astonishing difference. Approximately 8,000 delegates attended in 2016, compared to more than 14,000 this year, with 7,000 attending during the Economic Leaders’ Week alone. The official stressed that these figures make a considerable contribution to the tourism, hotel, and gastronomy industries. Finally, Peru’s challenge in coming years is to persevere in this joint work between government, industry, civil society and academia to materialize the agreements reached during APEC PERU 2024, when consensus decision-making among the region’s economies was restored.
