Congress of the Republic highlights leadership of APEC PERU 2024 authorities in the presidency of the forum
The Congress of the Republic held a recognition ceremony for the APEC PERU 2024 authorities for their outstanding management in the presidency of this forum. In the Miguel Grau Room, the president of the Legislative Branch, Eduardo Salhuana, praised the work of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmer Schialer; the president of the APEC PERU 2024 Presidency Working Group, Ambassador Carlos Chávez-Taffur; and the president of the APEC PERU 2024 Senior Officials Meetings, Ambassador Carlos Vásquez, as well as Luis Torres, from USIL. One of the most significant achievements was demonstrating Peru’s capacity to lead the global agenda and organize world-class events.
Speaking at the event, the Foreign Minister of Peru, Elmer Schialer, emphasized that Peru is proud and honored to say, without false modesty, that consensus has been recovered in this edition of APEC. He added that in recent years this forum had been subject to the geopolitical whirlwinds storming the entire planet, reducing its ability to take measures for the benefit of the citizens of the 21 economies that make up the Asia-Pacific region. This time the result was the adoption of 20 deliverables (a leaders’ declaration, 11 ministerial declarations and 8 technical-political documents).
Ambassador Carlos Chávez-Taffur, president of the APEC PERU 2024 Presidency Working Group, highlighted that hard work during almost two years involved deploying vast human, financial and logistical resources, and careful thematic preparation. He pointed out that all these actions managed to successfully carry out all activities during Peru’s APEC 2024 presidential year and gain Peru a favorable look in the eyes of the world.
Ambassador Carlos Vásquez, who chaired APEC PERU 2024 Senior Officials Meetings, highlighted that according to the APEC Secretariat in Singapore, there was be no precedent of so productive single APEC year in terms of adopted agreements, reflecting our country’s ability to build bridges in a complex international context.
During the recognition ceremony, the Congress of the Republic presented the “Lima Declaration”, which was signed on November 13 during the development of APEC for the People Legislative Session of 2024. This document will lead to setting up the APEC PERU parliamentary observatory as a permanent coordination mechanism in the region. Its main objectives include to monitor legislation to promote trade, promote harmonious regulatory frameworks, facilitate sharing of best congressional practices, among others. The Lima Declaration includes a commitment to promote and protect investments, foster sustainable development to consolidate a resilient economy, and economically empower women and vulnerable populations. It also creates parliamentary working groups focused on issues such as digital innovation, and the transition to a formal and global economy, among other points. Finally, this declaration also covers the promotion of an articulated participation of parliaments in the Asia-Pacific region.
